In August 2010 Indiana adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Math, Language Arts, and Literacy Standards for Social Studies and History, Science, and Technical Subjects. Since then schools have been working diligently to make the transition to the CCSS. In order to support our schools, Region 8 has been providing professional development to help schools make this transition. Consultants such as Bonnie Jo Kelley and Bob Trammel have helped elementary and secondary teachers prepare for the ITSEP+ and E/LA and Algebra I ECAs while making adjustments in their curriculum as they begin to implement the CCSS in their classrooms.

In addition, Region 8 ESC has been working with the Curriculum Institute, now the Center for College and Career Readiness, to present a series of workshops designed to help make the transition from the Indiana Academic Standards to the CCSS as smooth as possible. Three sessions in the fall and winter 2011-2012 focused on Indiana’s transition plan, the implementation of the new PARCC assessments, aligning classroom assessments to CCSS requirements, and action planning. Region 8 will also be working with the Center for College and Career Readiness during the 2012-2013 school year to provide additional professional development on the CCSS. As a member of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) consortium, Indiana will be implementing new student assessments in grades 3-11 in 2014-2015. As more information about the PARCC assessments comes available, Region 8 will provide the needed professional development to help schools make this transition.
